In the "Edda" by Snorre Sturlasson the tale is told of how Thor got his hammer "Mjolner".
Loke made a bet with the two blacksmiths Brokk and Eitre that they would not be able to forge the ground into a work of art. He bet his head on it. Despite Loke conjuring up a terrible fly which stung Brokk three times he succeeded in blowing and keeping the fire in the forge. Eitre fashioned three objects: a pig with golden bristles(Gullinburste), a golden ring (Draupner) and a hammer (Mjolner). The two dwarves went to Asgard where the gods Odin, Thor and Frej delivered their judgement on the bet. Brokk gave the ring to Odin, Frej received the pig and Thor got the hammer. Loke fled with his miraculous shoes as he had lost the bet.
Thor used his hammer to crush giants and hill and dale. His aim is always true and his hammer always returns to his hand like a boomerang.
Bride and groom are joined by the hammer in matrimony and it is also raised to bless tombs.
The hammer was a symbol of heathen religion.
By the end of the Viking era those who still believed in the old gods wore Thor's hammer round their neck in much the same way a Christian wears the cross of Jesus today.
Silver was the most precious metal to the Vikings. Silver jewellery is often found in broken pieces, enabling us to draw the conclusion that the Vikings often traded using silver.
